What are common air compressor failures, and how can they be repaired?

9月 18, 2025

Industrial development relies heavily on modern mechanical equipment, and the エアーコンプレッサー is one of the most essential machines. During operation, an air compressor compresses air to provide power for different equipment. To maximize efficiency and reduce operating costs, it is important to understand basic knowledge about air compressors, including possible failures and their repair methods.

I. What are common air compressor failures?

Depending on operating requirements, as well as environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and altitude, air compressors often encounter the following issues:

  1. The air compressor fails to start or starts poorly
  2. The air compressor does not supply air
  3. The air compressor exhaust pressure is too low
  4. The air compressor shuts down during operation
  5. The air compressor exhaust temperature is too high
  6. The air compressor sprays oil, causing shutdown
  7. The air compressor consumes too much oil

II. What are the air compressor repair methods?

Based on the failures listed above, here are some repair methods:

1. Trouble starting

If the air compressor cannot start, first shut it down and check whether the automatic air switch has tripped, whether the voltage is normal, and if the air inlet butterfly valve is properly closed. If the machine still does not start, verify whether control voltage is present. Then check if the control relay and time relay are working. If not, inspect fuses and related components.

2. No air supply

If the compressor is not supplying air, check whether the control cylinder is functioning. If so, examine the butterfly valve for mechanical failure. Next, confirm if the loading solenoid ISV coil has suction, and then check the circuits one by one.

3. Low exhaust pressure

If the exhaust pressure is too low, check the manual valve and regulating solenoid valve (2SV) for leaks, as well as the air line. Also verify that the butterfly valve is fully open, the air inlet regulator works properly, and the solenoid valves (3SV and 8SV) are not leaking. Lastly, inspect whether the pressure switch (IPS) requires readjustment.

4. Shutdown during operation

If the compressor shuts down suddenly, check whether it is an automatic normal shutdown. Inspect the automatic switch and thermal relay, as well as the cooling fan motor. High exhaust temperature or pressure may also trigger shutdown, so verify that motor voltage and operating conditions are normal.

5. High exhaust temperature

The normal exhaust temperature of an air compressor is 80–95°C. If overheating occurs, check ambient temperature, lubricant quality, oil level, and cooling fan performance. Inspect the thermostatic valve element, oil shut-off solenoid valve, and valve body. If the diaphragm or thermostatic valve core is damaged, replace them. Finally, check whether the oil filter is dirty and replace it if necessary.

6. Oil spray shutdown

If the shutdown is caused by oil spraying, inspect the oil shut-off solenoid valve (5SV) for voltage and integrity. If it is normal, check the check valve, then reassemble or replace it if needed.

7. Excessive oil consumption

If the air compressor consumes too much oil, inspect the condensate discharged from the steam trap for excessive oil, the compressor oil level, and the low-pressure valve’s opening pressure. Also check the oil return line and oil separator element for blockages, as these factors may lead to higher oil usage.

The above are the seven most common エアーコンプレッサー failures and repair methods. In practice, not all operators are able to carry out repairs independently. In such cases, it is recommended to rely on the Spartan Air Compressor service team for professional support and timely solutions.
